What to do after you get your PAL

So you got your gun license, now what? These are all just my personal opinions on what most new PAL owners should do. Your unique situation may call for a different approach but these are good general recommendations.

  1. Get a lockable safe or case. If you want, buy some combo trigger locks
  2. Choose a gun to buy based on what kind of shooting you’ll do. If you don’t know what kind you’d like to get into, here are some popular choices at a variety of price points:
    • A semi-auto 22LR like a Winchester Wildcat, Ruger 10/22, or Savage A22.
    • A pump action 12ga shotgun like a Mossberg Maverick, Winchester SXP, Mossberg 500, or Benelli Nova.
    • A centerfire bolt action deer/moose rifle like a Savage Axis, Weatherby Vanguard, or Tikka T3X
  3. Buy in-store or online
  4. Join a range (I also have a list of the local Edmonton gun ranges here)
  5. Take a course like Mapleseed or your hunter’s education course.
  6. Learn more about being a firearms owner in Canada. I’ve got a YouTube channel here, a blog here, and a podcast here.
