PoP Testing
Need to complete a Proof of Proficiency (PoP) test for an Authorization to Carry (ATC)? HGG Firearms Training can administer the required testing at an approved shooting range in the Edmonton area.
This is testing only. There is no training included.
You should already be familiar and comfortable with the firearm, holster, ammunition and course of fire before booking your test. Come prepared to demonstrate that you can safely and accurately use the firearm you intend to carry.
What is a Proof of Proficiency Test?
A Proof of Proficiency is part of the process for applying for an Authorization to Carry a restricted firearm for lawful occupational purposes.
An ATC is a specific authorization and is not something that is available simply because you own a firearm or have a PAL/RPAL. Alberta notes that an ATC may be available to licensed individuals who require a restricted firearm for wilderness protection, dispatch while trapping, or certain other lawful occupational purposes.
The PoP test is used to demonstrate that you are proficient with the firearm you intend to carry.
HGG Firearms Training can administer the test and complete the required documentation for administration. We do not provide ATC training as part of this service.
Come Ready to Test
This isn’t a training course.
Before booking your test, you should already know how to safely handle, load, fire, holster and draw your firearm. You should also be comfortable completing the required course of fire within the specified time limits and at the accuracy required.
If you need training or practice before your assessment, please arrange that before your PoP appointment.
You should arrive with the equipment you intend to use for your ATC testing, including:
- The firearm you intend to carry
- Appropriate ammunition
- Your ATC-compliant holster
- Any other required equipment
The firearm and equipment requirements can depend on the type of ATC you are applying for. Make sure you have confirmed the requirements that apply to your application before booking your test.
ATC for Protection
The Proof of Proficiency test for protection involves shooting from multiple distances and positions.
The course of fire requires:
- 5 metres standing
- 5 metres kneeling
- 10 metres standing
- 10 metres kneeling
- 15 metres standing
- 15 metres kneeling
Each position requires 6 rounds to be fired within 20 seconds.
A total of 30 out of 36 shots must meet the accuracy requirement.
Shots must fall within an 18-inch diameter target area, which is a 9-inch radius.
A holster is required for the test.
ATC for Dispatch
A different Proof of Proficiency standard applies when the ATC is for dispatching wildlife while trapping.
The dispatch test uses a .22 LR firearm and requires shots to be placed within a 4-inch diameter circle.
The test includes:
3 Metres
- 6 rounds
- 5 of 6 shots must be within the 4-inch circle
5 Metres
- 12 rounds
- 10 of 12 shots must be within the 4-inch circle
Make sure you know which ATC category and test standard applies to your application before scheduling your assessment.
Where Does the Test Take Place?
PoP tests are booked at approved shooting ranges.
Once your test is scheduled, HGG will provide you with the range location and appointment details.
The test is conducted as a live-fire assessment. Please arrive on time with your firearm, ammunition and required equipment ready to go.
